Personal Banking & Exchange Control in Mozambique

Foreign residents need a local account for salary, rent and utilities, and a clear understanding of the exchange control rules that govern every transfer in and out.

What banks ask for

Expect to present your passport, NUIT, residence documentation, proof of address and evidence of income. Requirements vary between banks, and the difference between a smooth opening and repeated visits is usually how complete the first submission is.

Exchange control is the part people underestimate

Mozambique operates exchange control administered through the Banco de Moçambique and the commercial banks. Transfers abroad require a documented underlying transaction, and inbound investment capital should be registered when it enters so that dividends, loan repayments and disinvestment can lawfully leave later.

Register the money on the way in

The single most costly mistake foreign investors make is failing to register inbound capital correctly. Repatriation is then contested years later, when the original evidence is hard to reconstruct.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account before I have residence?

Some banks accommodate non-residents in limited forms, but a full resident account normally follows your NUIT and residence documentation. We sequence it with your immigration file.

Can I hold foreign currency?

Foreign currency accounts are available subject to bank policy and exchange control rules. We set out the conditions applying to your situation in writing.
