Tofo & Inhambane in Mozambique

The best-value stretch of the Mozambican coast: whale sharks, manta cleaning stations, surf and an unpretentious beach town.

The marine attraction

The Inhambane coast hosts one of the more reliable whale shark aggregations in the western Indian Ocean, alongside manta cleaning stations and humpback whales passing between roughly June and October.

Getting there

Fly to Inhambane, or drive north from Maputo on the EN1 — around six to seven hours to Tofo with the final stretch requiring care.

Frequently asked questions

When are whale sharks around?

Sightings occur year-round with peaks generally between October and March. Nothing is guaranteed with wild animals.

Is Tofo good for beginners?

Yes. Several established dive centres run courses, and the snorkelling ocean safaris suit non-divers.
